Strings Across the Sky (SATS) was created in 1988 after Andrea Hansen, then a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, visited the arctic as part of a concert tour. She met with a local fiddler who told Andrea of his dream to keep alive the fiddling tradition that had once thrived throughout the North of Canada. The two co-founded Strings Across the Sky, a charitable organization that builds self-esteem, teaches communications tools, enhances reading and arithmetic all through learning to play the fiddle. Since that time, SATS has run programs in 17 Arctic communities and transported over 300 donated violins to the north, introducing hundreds of young people to the violin. For her outstanding contributions, Andrea Hansen has received the Order of Canada and many other awards, as well as being honoured as the first non-Aboriginal person to win a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award. Currently, SATS is seeking donations to support its Fiddle Library and Instrument Repair Programs as well as to cover the costs of running fiddle camps and bringing fiddle teachers to the North.
All strings players are invited to join us for a special concert to celebrate our efforts. Music for the concert will be played by whoever shows up with their instrument, making what will likely be one of the largest jam sessions Victoria has ever seen! Even first year players will be able to join us in playing the simple fiddle tunes, classical melodies and rounds that have been selected for this event. Experienced players will have no problem picking up the tunes by ear on the night of the concert. This will be an informal event, so come dressed as you are, or in costume if you like! Everyone is welcome; family and friends can come too and admission is by donation to Strings Across the Sky.
