Victoria Irish Fiddler Ceilidh Briscoe

Ceilidh has just recently returned from New York City where she competed in the North American qualifier for the All-Ireland Music Championships. This was Ceilidh's third year competing. She succeeded in securing a first place win in the open category, and placed second in the slow airs category. An impressive showing, considering this is the first year competing  in the next and more competitive age category of 15 to 18 year olds. These two wins go to complement her two victories at the same contest last year. This now paves the way for her to travel to Cavan, Ireland, in the hope of securing her second win, having already earned the title of All-Ireland Champion last year. We know of no other junior Canadian fiddler to earn such a distinction. (www.fleadh2010.com.)

Fifteen year old, Ceilidh, has been playing the violin since the age of five. She studies via the internet and in person with Brian Conway. (www.brianconway.com) Mr. Conway is a five time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, and was voted the Best Traditional Artist for 2008 by U.S. Based Echo Magazine. She started her fiddle studies with renowned Victoria folk-fiddlers Calvin Cairns and Daniel Lapp, and was a member of the B.C. Fiddle Orchestra and Conservatory Fiddles for a number of years..

Ceilidh also studies classical violin with local teacher Barbara McDougall. She plays in the first violin section of the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, and is a member of the Collegium Program at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. She just recently completed the practical portion of her Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music examinations, and passed with First Class Honours.

Ceilidh studies the lyrica whenpigsfly2@telus.net  Sligo style of fiddling, and exhibits a musical maturity and command of the instrument rarely found in an artist of her age. She represents the third generation of Briscoe fiddlers.
