Victoria Fiddle Society- About Us

About Us

The mandate of The Victoria Fiddle Society is to establish a fiddle community for all persons interested in fiddle music in the Victoria region. We believe that a unified body will create a healthy, vital atmosphere that will benefit students, professionals, music enthusiasts and subsequently the entire community.

In order for us to build relationships among each other we must first establish a common place to congregate. In keeping with the times, we have created a 'virtual kitchen party' at this web site which is dedicated to the pursuit of the VFS mandate. The VFS web site is our home base and the soul of our fiddling community and as our online relationships grow, they will flow outwards into the rest of the community. In addition, our society will actively promote fiddle music in the community through workshops and events and by bringing people of all ages together to enjoy fiddle music.

The Victoria Fiddle Society participates in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival  held in May each year, by offering a variety of awards: Three Folk Fiddle Awards:  Junior   (Adjudicator's Choice for a Young Performer), 14 & Under,  and Senior.  The Leonard Sexsmith Trophy & Award for the best BC Fiddle Composer, the Frankie Rodgers Trophy & Award (best original composition), Junior Twin Fiddle, Jazz/Swing, and Folk Fiddle-Small & Large Ensemble.  In 2009, we introduced the $100 Oliver Schroer Award.  In his lifetime, the playing and teaching of fiddler Oliver Schroer encapsulated the spirit, magic and beauty of traditional and contemporary fiddle tunes. With this award, the VFS would like to acknowledge a performer who embodies the spirit of fiddle music regardless of their age, style or ability.

So come join us by becoming a member. Members will receive discounts to concerts, jam sessions, workshops and other Society sponsored events and get regular updates on what is happening in our Fiddle Community.

Jam Etiquette:
Everybody is asked to be mindful of Jam etiquette when attending a VFS Jam. The objective of our Fiddle Jams is for musicians to get together to play and learn from one another.  We ask that all participants please keep the conversations to a minimum and save your visiting for the breaks so everyone who wants to play can hear the tunes.  Also if you wish to leave the jam for any reason, please do so as quietly as possible, between tunes.
